Flavia Maria Guerra S. A. Oliveira, Ph.D.

Short bio and research interests

Flavia Maria Guerra S. A. Oliveira is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering (ENE) at the University of Brasilia (UnB). She earned her undergraduate degree in electrical engineering at the University of Brasilia. She obtained her M.Sc. degree from the University of Campinas (Unicamp) in Electrical Engineering, School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (FEEC), and her M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in biomedical engineering from the University of Southern California (USC), Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME). She worked in the Cardiorespiratory Sleep Laboratory at USC. She is a member of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS), of the Brazilian Society of Biomedical Engineering (SBEB) and of the American Thoracic Society (ATS).

Her research interest includes physiological signal processing and systems identification. In particular, her research aims to apply engineering techniques such as computational modeling, digital signal processing, and systems identification to study the cardiorespiratory and cardiovascular systems for the determination of quantitative metrics of the autonomic nervous system, based on the analysis of noninvasive physiological records, such as respiration, blood pressure, and the electrocardiogram. Her research interests also include investigation of the interaction between obstructive sleep apnea and autonomic and metabolic function.
